An Invitation to Join the NPC Code of Practice

After extensive consultation with the auto parts recyclers, police services, offices of fair trading and major parts buyers throughout Australia - a voluntary Code of Practice has been established for the industry to reduce the likelihood of participating businesses inadvertently dealing in stolen motor vehicle parts.

It is estimated that the trade in stolen motor vehicles and car parts costs  the community more than $300m per annum.

Why should your business participate in the Code of Practice?

There are a number of key benefits for your business to participate. They include:

  • an independent body, National Parts Code (NPC) has been established to administer
    and manage all functions of the Code Australia-wide;
  • it is expected that insurance companies will support the Code by insisting that all
    approved repairers source recycled parts used in crash repairs from participating
    recyclers;
  • the NPC will actively market the Code brand to all other buyers and consumers of
    recycled parts, including fleet owners, repair shops, and other consumers;
  • participating businesses will be promoted via a variety of channels, including an online
    directory of recyclers for the reference of trade and private buyers;
  • businesses will be provided with the Code of Practice logo and other marketing tools
    for incorporation in advertising material, including Yellow Pages, magazines, etc. At the
    same time NPC will be promoting the Code members to a range of other consumers;
  • a dedicated website to allow Code members to share experiences and ideas, but more
    importantly highlight best practice in parts tracking systems;
  • for the first time recyclers will have a single national standard that is independently
    monitored and verifiable.
  • A minimum of 5 % of participating businesses will be audited by the NPC per annum to ensure that participating businesses can demonstrate to customers their compliance with the Code’s requirements. Through this process the public will be reassured that they can purchase parts from Code Members with confidence.
